Thanks to its location open to the Mediterranean, Skikda has been the home of many human civilizations. The prehistoric stage was known through two eras, the first being the discovery of a group of antiquities in the areas of Tamalos, Karkara and the Qol Peninsula dating back to the Palaeolithic era, and the second dating to the dawn of history, during which the Berber Kutama dynasty settled. Skikda was of interest to the Phoenicians who settled in it during the year 11 BC.
